Job Duties:

The Advising and Academic Services Coordinator works closely with the TRIO grant project participants to develop and implement individualized academic plans. This staff member monitors students’ academic progress through graduation, provides guidance on course requirements, assigns tutoring to be conducted at university tutoring centers, and provides information and advice regarding financial literacy. The Advising and Academic Services Coordinator assists the director in recruiting and selecting participants who meet eligibility requirements and follows data collection requirements for the Annual Performance Report (APR).

Core Responsibilities
 

  • Review students’ program application information, financial need, academic need, assist with interviewing of project participants, and make recommendations for selection to the grant director.
  • Assess the educational needs of project participants, identify services that will promote their academic development, and prepare individualized academic plans.
  • Advise participants regarding majors, course selection, degree planning, career development, and university policies, as a supplemental adviser, with consideration of disability-related challenges.
  • Monitor the academic standing and degree progress of all project participants, coordinating the project’s midterm intervention and other academic support efforts to promote the academic achievement, retention, and graduation of project participants.
  • Perform outreach and design special services for students in negative academic standing.
  • Teach a General Arts and Sciences course “Foundations for Academic Success.” Design and facilitate programming on course registration, financial planning, applying for scholarships, and other topics.
  • Meet with students to assess their tutorial needs and assign tutoring as appropriate.
  • Coordinate Mentor activities with training, matching students, and approving payroll.
  • Provide information and advice regarding financial aid, financial literacy, and completion of the FAFSA. Organize workshops and arrange for speakers to address budgeting and financial concerns.
  • Plan events and prepare publicity materials, schedule rooms and complete food order e-forms.
  • Monitor achievement of goals and objectives specified in federal grant and run data queries.
  • Assist the Director in compiling project reports, selecting eligible students for grant aid, entering data on Student Access, sending Annual Performance Reports to US Department of Education.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducts intake assessments, maintains current data records, and determines eligibility for disability services
  • Consults with clinician professionals to evaluate access needs and allocate resources
  • Provides information and resources regarding legal rights and responsibilities to populations with disabilities and their support systems
  • Facilitates the interactive process in collaboration with populations with disabilities, students, instructors, and staff to determine reasonable accommodations
  • Assists in the development of programs and initiatives that promote awareness, sensitivity, advocacy, and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities
  • Provides consultative services to staff regarding appropriate services and accommodations

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience counseling, advising, or providing academic support services to students who have a variety of academic majors.
  • Familiarity with federal grants or TRIO programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, vocational rehabilitation, or a related academic discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in an academic setting.
