Measles

Measles was considered eliminated by the in 2000. However, measles is returning in the US and experts are linking the resurgence to the decreasing MMR vaccination rates.

Although many viruses are not severe, measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe symptoms and complications. The measles virus spreads from person to person via coughing and sneezing and can live in the air and common surfaces for up to 2 hours.

Symptoms include high fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and watery eyes. A rash typically develops 2-4 days after symptom onset. Complications can range from uncomfortable to life-threatening. Those most at risk are unvaccinated individuals, increasing the likelihood of becoming infected to 90%.

The best way to prevent measles is by a safe and effective vaccine.

Tobacco Cessation

Smoking and vaping remain a health concern among college-aged students. Tobacco and nicotine use have significant long-term effects on respiratory health, heart health, and reproductive health. They also suppress the immune system and greatly increase the risk of various cancers. Vaping is widely considered to be less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, but it’s important to note that vaping is not without risk. The safest choice for overall health is to use neither product.

Most vaping products contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive chemical. Nicotine has negative impacts on nearly every organ system. Nicotine affects many aspects of a person’s life, such as concentration, mood, and sleep. The aerosols and smoke from a vape or cigarette also expose the body to harmful chemicals that may increase the risk of long-term health effects. Because of these risks, college-aged students may be interested in quitting or cutting back on vaping or smoking.

In collaboration with the Eau Claire City/County Health Department and the College of Nursing, Student Health Service (SHS) would like to highlight an offered service. Tobacco/nicotine cessation appointments are available at no cost. Personalized, non-judgmental, and ongoing support is provided. Nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges can be provided at no charge. Prescription medications such as bupropion SR, varenicline, nicotine nasal sprays, or nicotine inhalers can also be prescribed at any pharmacy.

Schedule a tobacco/nicotine cessation appointment with SHS via the or call (715) 863-5360.
